Surveying is often overlooked as insignificant, however, there are records of it being used in Ancient Egypt to measure boundaries for land ownership and taxation.

Using drones and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) modern surveys can be conducted from the air. This technique enables the capture of data from above using downward facing sensors such as cameras or LIDAR. Each image is tagged with the exact coordinates it was taken. Once back on the ground, software can be used to recreate an orthmosaic map, elevation models or 3D models.

Drone and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) surveys are heavily reliant on reliable Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) information as well as corrections being received either by NTRIP or by using a ‘Base’ station as part of the UAV survey setup. This is required both for where to fly and for the precise location of the individual images/sensor data.
